New STA Level 2 Swimming Teacher Qualification 2026

We are excited to share some fantastic news from our partners at STA: in 2026, STA will be launching a brand-new Level 2 Swimming Teacher Qualification, designed to replace the existing STA Award and STA Certificate and create one clear, streamlined pathway for swim teacher training.

This updated qualification has been developed in response to feedback from swim schools, employers, learners and educators across the sector. It brings together essential knowledge, practical skills and modern teaching approaches into a comprehensive programme that meets current industry needs.

What This Means for You

  • One Clear Pathway: Rather than deciding between different awards and certificates, the new Level 2 qualification will provide a single, structured route into teaching swimming.

  • Focus on Practical Skills: The qualification emphasises hands-on experience, safety, water confidence, stroke mechanics and the ability to plan and deliver engaging, inclusive lessons for all ages and abilities.

  • Ready to Teach: Graduates will leave with the confidence and competence to step poolside and begin teaching right away, whether that’s in swim schools, leisure centres or community programmes.

  • Professional Recognition: As with existing STA qualifications, this new Level 2 qualification will be respected internationally — opening doors to work both locally and worldwide.

  • Blended Learning Options: The new course offered may include up to five blended learning topic options offering learners more flexibility to complete some of the theoretical components of the course online at their own pace. All practical teaching modules remain in person to ensure tutor feedback and practical skills are mastered with the best learning environment.
